Legacy Application Modernization Tools & Services

We provide perspectives on extracting the value in your legacy applications that are new to many clients:

  • Utilize renovation software tools/services to modernize those applications that you aren't ready to replace yet, to improve service and cut costs,

    • Implement a relational database
    • Replace non-standard language with a standard one
    • Restructure code to reduce maintenance costs
    • Move applications to Windows and Linux, including CICS applications

  • Utilize re-architecting tools, which work by data mining the legacy code for business rules, to replace the old technology application with a new technology implementation at a fraction of the cost and with much lower risk.

  • Utilize either tool or both to leverage your legacy assets in a rewrite project, which can save you 1/4 to 1/2 of the project costs and reduce your risk substantially.

Some renovation projects can be surprisingly inexpensive as a result of some niche technologies we can introduce to you.  For example,

  • Modifying COBOL programs for VSAM to DB2 can be as little as $200/program in bulk.  Fully tested, as little as $400/program in bulk.

  • Restructuring ("de-spaghettizing") COBOL code can yield a solid ROI regardless of the size or state of your code library because the price for the service is proportional to the improvement in the code.

See how different types of process automation can leverage your legacy code to move you to the solution you want, but better, faster, cheaper, and at lower risk.

If you are already considering an automated modernization project, you may want to read our new essay, "It's Not Magic."

IT Risk Management and Cost Control

If you are trying to modernize, replace or rewrite a legacy application with more than 1,000 programs or a million lines of code, the chance that your project will fail outright or experience career damaging cost and delivery overruns is greater than 7 in 10 using conventional project architectures.  Do you really want to carry that risk yourself?

Our risk assessment, mitigation, implementation and on-going oversight services are an inexpensive insurance premium against project cost/delivery overruns and outright cancellation.

Our Procurement and Vendor Management services leverage our extensive experience working for vendors to the advantage of your negotiation and contracting.  We know the landscape from the other side of the table, and apply that experience to ensuring that you get the best price and terms, and that they deliver what you are paying for. We confidently expect you to recoup the cost of our fees many times over in direct savings in addition to mitigation of your project risk.

Business Process Management

The hype machine is in full gear - BPM will be the Next Big Thing, #1 on CIO's radar, etc. Whether it will change the world remains to be seen, but it is clear that it can make a big difference for your business right now, with payback periods of a few months in some cases.

If you boil it all down, there is nothing that the latest BPM platforms can do that we couldn't do with the workflow platforms of the 1990's, or COBOL/CICS applications in the 1980's.  The difference is cost. Modern BPM platforms allow an optimized workflow implementation at a fraction of the cost of just a few years ago, which in turn makes practical automation of smaller scale manual processes as well as workflow optimization of existing automation with too high a cost of usage.

We demonstrate the substantial, real increases in personnel productivity, both inside and especially outside of IT, that are possible with Business Process Management (BPM) based applications.  The same office staff can handle increases of 50% or more in workload, and be much happier in their job.  Learn how this can work for you.
